- If you need a heavy-duty scanner for a department or large office, need to scan at up to tabloid (11-by-17 inch) size or even larger, and also need a letter-size flatbed suitable for scanning bound material, the Kodak i3450 Scanner ($5,995) may be what you're looking for. The i3450 is a close cousin to both the Kodak i3400 Scanner and the Kodak i3250 Scanner, which is our Editors' Choice.
Editor Rating: Excellent (4.0)
'Kodak Alaris describes the i3250 Scanner ($4,995) on its website as a departmental-level document scanner. However, as one of the lowest-cost models on that list, it's also a more-than-reasonable choice for a large workgroup or a midsize office that needs to scan at larger than letter and legal size, and also needs a letter-size flatbed.

Bottom Line
The Kodak i3500 Scanner offers impressive speed and paper capacity, and the ability to scan up to tabloid-size documents. But this capability and flexibility will cost you.
The Kodak i3500 Scanner is a high-performance document scanner suitable for departmental or large-office use, with capabilities commensurate with its substantial $5,995 price. Should your office require fast scanning of large numbers of documents at up to tabloid size, the i3500 deserves a close look. In testing, it showed sizzling speed in scanning to image PDF format over a USB 3.0 connection, though it lost considerable time in text recognition when scanning to searchable PDF.
Design and Features
The i3500 measures 9.4 by 17 by 14.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 35 pounds, matching the size and weight of the Kodak i3400 Scanner ($3,670.66 at Amazon) . In appearance, it more closely resembles a laser printer than a document scanner, with an input tray in front and an output bin on top. The input tray is wide enough to take letter-size paper in landscape orientation or tabloid-size (11-by-17-inch) paper in portrait orientation.

Its 300-sheet input tray, recommended daily scanning volume of up to 25,000 pages, and rated speed of up to 110 pages per minute (ppm) when scanning single-sided or 220 images per minute (ipm) when scanning double-sided (or duplex), with each side of a page counting as one image, are all improvements over the specs of the i3400. That model has an already-hefty 250-sheet tray, a recommended daily max of 20,000 pages, and a rated speed of 90ppm (single-sided, or simplex) or 180ipm (duplex). The i3500's input tray has the same humongous capacity as the Editors' Choice Panasonic KV-S5076H ($4,079.00 at Amazon) , which has an even larger recommended daily scan volume (up to 35,000 sheets) and a slightly lower rated speed (100ppm for simplex and 200ipm for duplex).
The control panel includes an LCD and control buttons that let you choose a scan profile and start the scan. The LCD is backlit, making it easy to read, and it offers three rows of 18 characters. That's enough to let you use descriptive names when you create scan profiles and then find the right profile easily when you scroll through the choices. Its only downside is that Kodak's scan utility limits you to a maximum of nine profiles.
Even though the i3500 doesn't include a flatbed, you can add one as an external accessory, with both legal-size ($495) and tabloid-size ($1,400) versions available. To install either, you simply connect it by USB cable to the same computer the i3500 is connected to.
Setup and Software
As is typical with high-end document scanners, the i3500 comes with no bundled application programs. The presumption is that offices that need this level of scan capability will already have their own preferred programs. Twain, WIA, and ISIS drivers are all included, so you should be able to scan from almost any Windows program with a scan command. In addition, you can download drivers for Mac and Linux. Kodak Alaris includes the same two scan utilities that come with most of its other scanners: Kodak SmartTouch and Kodak Capture Pro. The company also offers Kodak Info Input, a Web-based document capture solution, which can be integrated with Capture Pro. For my tests scanning to image PDF, searchable PDF, and editable text formats, I used SmartTouch, which includes built-in optical character recognition (OCR).
Performance
The i3500 showed sizzling speed in scanning to image PDF format. It must be noted that I tested it over a USB 3.0 connection (using the included cable) on our new test bed, while our two comparison scanners were tested over USB 2.0 on an older test bed, even though both scanners were also compatible with USB 3.0. Scanning to a PDF image file, using a setting of 200 pixels per inch (ppi) and black-and-white mode in landscape orientation to scan our standard 25-sheet, 50-page test document, I clocked it at 115ppm for simplex and 214ipm for duplex, more or less matching the i3500's rated speeds of 110ppm and 220ipm. This is what we call the raw scanning speed, the time the scanner physically scans the paper, not including any lag time before the scan begins and processing time between when the scan is done and the scanned file is saved. The speeds are easily faster than our tested raw scanning speeds for the i3400 (83ppm and 167ipm), at the same resolution and color mode, as well as faster than the Panasonic KV-S5076H (100ppm and 173ipm).
See How We Test Scanners
When scanning and saving to image PDF, including the lag time, the i3500 slowed to 60ppm for simplex and 115.3ipm for duplex. This is a tad faster than the Panasonic KV-S5076H, which I timed at 57.6ppm and 106ipm, and the i3400, which we clocked at 50ppm and 104ipm.
When I scanned the same 25-page, 50-image document to searchable PDF format, the text recognition step added a significant amount of extra time. At 300ppi, I clocked the i3500 at 1 minute, 10 seconds, or 44 seconds longer than it took to scan to image PDF. That's a tad faster than the less-expensive Kodak i3400, which finished in 1:16, and considerably slower than the Panasonic KV-S5076H, which scanned, recognized the text, and saved the same file in just 37 seconds.
Text recognition is a strong point for the i3500. It did well on our OCR tests, with the combination of scanner and software reading both our Times New Roman and Arial test pages at sizes as small as 8 points without a mistake, and it generally handled our less-commercial test fonts well.
Conclusion
The Kodak i3500 is a scanner to be reckoned with, combining sizzling speed, voluminous paper capacity, a prodigious duty cycle, and the ability to scan up to tabloid-size paper. Although it was faster in our testing than the Editors' Choice Panasonic KV-S5076H in scanning to image PDF format (though with the advantage of being tested over a USB 3.0 connection), it took considerably longer to scan and save a file to searchable PDF, which is the preferred format for document archiving for many businesses. If that's the case for yours, the Panasonic KV-S5076H is the better option, and it holds onto its Editors' Choice—though not by much. And it's worth noting that the Kodak i3400 offers much of the speed and capabilities of the i3500, at a somewhat lower price.
